Daniels' big game bests Huntsville in 5-2 Louisiana win

PharmacyFirst Ice    Sat, Mar 19, 2016

John Daniels had one goal and two assists to lead the Louisiana IceGators to a 5-2 victory over the Huntsville Havoc.

Daniels got on the board by slotting home a short handed goal 3:20 into the second period to make the score 3-0 Louisiana. Louisiana was on a disadvantage when Blake Hietala went off the ice for high sticking. Daniels dished an assist on Geordie Wudrick's goal that made the score 1-0 Louisiana at 3:51 into the first period. He added another helper on Wudrick's goal that made the score 5-2 Louisiana at 9:57 into the third period.

The IceGators' penalty kill excelled, as Louisiana gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays.

With 30 shots on target during the contest, the IceGators exceeded the 23.2 shots they average per game this year. Louisiana found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the IceGators average 2.7 goals per contest. Louisiana could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 20 minutes in penalties during the game.

More assists for Louisiana came via Zac Frischmon, who had one and Jake Hauswirth, who had two.

Huntsville stifled the IceGators' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Havoc were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 18 penalty minutes. Huntsville put 38 shots on net during the contest, more than the 21.6 it averages per game.

The Havoc were helped by John McGinnis, who had one goal. McGinnis scored 9:42 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Louisiana. Huntsville also got points from Dave Williams, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Dylan Nowakowski also scored for Huntsville. In addition, Huntsville received assists from Stuart Stefan, Nick Schneider, and Jason Popek, who contributed one each.

Brad Barone made 13 saves before being replaced by Adam Courchaine, who took the win and made 23 saves. Louisiana registered zero goals on six power play opportunities. Huntsville's starting goalie, Kevin Genoe, made nine saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Ryan de Melo, who stopped 16 shots.
