Columbus outlasts Louisiana, 5-3

The Columbus Cottonmouths and the Louisiana IceGators were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Columbus made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Chad Bennett's goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker.

Bennett was all over the ice for the Cottonmouths, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Bennett scored the first of his two goals at 11:03 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Columbus. Tyler Henry picked up the assist. Bennett's next tally made the score 5-3 Columbus with 22 seconds left in the third period.

Columbus stifled Louisiana's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Cottonmouths' offense was clicking better than usual and put 24 shots on goal during the game, better than the 20.8 shots per game they average. Columbus found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The Cottonmouths average 2.3 goals per game. The defensemen of Columbus were also effective in the IceGators' zone, and came away with two goals.

Columbus additionally got points from Dylen McKinlay, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Kyle Shapiro, who also had one goal and one assist. Columbus also got a goal from Rusty Hafner as well. In addition, Columbus received assists from Andy Bathgate, who had two.

Louisiana was helped by Blake Hietala, who finished with one goal. Hietala scored 5:18 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Columbus. Dylan Hood provided the assist. Louisiana also got points from Jake Hauswirth, who also registered one goal and one assist. Zac Frischmon also scored for Louisiana. More assists for Louisiana came via Ben Kramer, who had two and Geordie Wudrick and John Daniels, who contributed one each.

Shannon Szabados rejected 25 shots on goal for the Cottonmouths. Columbus incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Adam Courchaine recorded 19 saves for the IceGators. Louisiana incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
