Steve Morra scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, and the Peoria Rivermen held off the challenges of the Columbus Cottonmouths in a tough 2-1 win. Morra provided Peoria with the game-winning tally when he scored 9:33 into the first period. The Rivermen played down a man on Zach Hale's roughing. Dan Bremner assisted on the tally.Peoria was led by goalie Kyle Rank, who finished with 37 saves while allowing one goal. Rank certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.19 entering the contest. The Rivermen were led by Walker Wintoneak, who racked up one goal. Wintoneak scored on the power play 11:48 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Peoria. A hooking penalty on Kyle Shapiro had put Peoria on the power play. Matt Summers picked up the assist. The Rivermen excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The 37 shots that Peoria put on net surpassed the Rivermen's average of 28.7 shots per game this season. Columbus put 38 shots on net during the contest, more than the 28.0 it averages per game. The Cottonmouths were led by Shawn Bates, who scored the team's only goal. Bates scored 15:37 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Peoria. Tyler Henry assisted on the tally. Peoria incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Brandon Jaeger made 35 saves for Columbus on 37 shots. The Cottonmouths incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
