Knoxville hangs on, beats Huntsville 4-2

The Knoxville Ice Bears beat the Huntsville Havoc, 4-2, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Knoxville took over the lead for good with a goal by Corey Hale at 13:28 in the first period. The Ice Bears had gotten the advantage when Huntsville's Nick Schneider was sent off for holding. Doug Reid assisted on the tally.

Knoxville got the win with help from a great game by Reid, who had one goal and two assists. Reid scored 15:50 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Knoxville. Trever Hertz picked up the assist.

The Ice Bears forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and two majors for 34 minutes in penalty time. Knoxville surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. The Ice Bears relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Ben Power, Reid and Josh Cousineau took 13 of the team's 25 shots.

More assists for Knoxville came via Jake Flegel, Jason Berube, Zack LaRue, and Todd Hosmer, who each chipped in one.

The Havoc's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Huntsville finished with 32 penalty minutes.

The Havoc were led by Kyle McNeil, who racked up one goal and one assist. McNeil scored 3:23 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Knoxville. Zach Josepher provided the assist. Huntsville also got a goal from Steve Mele as well. In addition, Huntsville received assists from John McGinnis, who had one.

Knoxville's Bryan Hince stopped 23 shots out of the 25 that he faced. The Ice Bears registered three goals on seven power play opportunities. Knoxville ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Corey Fulton was ejected from the game. Jordan Ruby recorded 21 saves for Huntsville. The Havoc registered one goal on three power play opportunities.
