Columbus boosted by Jaeger's play in net, beats Knoxville 6-1

The Columbus Cottonmouths relied on the sparkling performance of Brandon Jaeger in net to grab a 6-1 win against the Knoxville Ice Bears.

Shawn Bates was a peerless playmaker for Columbus, as he dished out four to beat Knoxville,.

The Cottonmouths' offense was clicking better than usual and put 29 shots on goal during the game, better than the 23.1 shots per game they average. Columbus surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, the Cottonmouths average 2.9 goals per contest.

Columbus also got points from Craig Simchuk, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Columbus included Cody Freeman, who had two and Patrick McCadden, Kyle Brodie, and Al Graves, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were John Jackson, who had two, Ben OQuinn, who had three, and Garret Lockeridge and Andy Bathgate, who each chipped in one.

The Ice Bears racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with five minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. Knoxville had been averaging 17.0 minutes in penalties per game. By firing 28 shots on goal, the Ice Bears exceeded the 24.3 shots they average per game this year. Knoxville's offense was helped by the efforts of its defensemen, who managed to put 12 shots on net during the game.

Jaeger recorded 27 saves for Columbus. The Cottonmouths totaled 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors and two majors and went 1-for-4 on the power play. Braely Torris rejected 23 shots on goal for the Ice Bears. Knoxville registered one goal on two power play opportunities.
