Columbus uses shootout to best Macon Mayhem, 3-2 (3-2 SO)

Craig Simchuk netted the deciding goal for the Columbus Cottonmouths in the shootout as Cottonmouths prevailed over Macon Mayhem, 3-2 (3-2 SO).

The shootout lasted for 14 attempts between the teams. Macon Mayhem got shootout goals from Connor P. Toomey and Joshua Ranalli. Columbus also got shootout goals from Ben OQuinn and Andy Bathgate.

The Cottonmouths came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Columbus fell behind 2-1 after a goal by Macon Mayhem's Shawn Skelly at 8:02 in the second period. The Cottonmouths knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Chris Rial at 2:03 in the third period.

Columbus put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Macon Mayhem to score on any of its three power plays. The Cottonmouths kept Macon Mayhem's goalie busy throughout the game, and Garrett Bartus made 30 saves on 33 shots.

Columbus was helped by Kyle Shapiro, who tallied one goal. Shapiro scored 1:04 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Columbus. Louis Belisle assisted on the tally. Columbus also got points from Rial, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Columbus came via Kyle Johnson and Bathgate, who contributed one each.

Macon Mayhem stifled the Cottonmouths' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Macon Mayhem relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Skelly, Mark McGowan and Lucas LaBelle took 25 of the team's 44 shots.

Macon Mayhem additionally got points from Michael Montagna, who also racked up one goal and one assist. In addition, Macon Mayhem received assists from Toomey, who had one.

Columbus' Brandon Jaeger stopped 42 shots out of the 44 that he faced. The Cottonmouths incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Macon Mayhem incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
