Huntsville uses shootout to best Columbus, 4-3 (1-0 SO)Columbus Civic Center Fri, Oct 23, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
The Huntsville Havoc and the Columbus Cottonmouths both failed to score in overtime, but Huntsville won the game 4-3 (1-0 SO) after Stuart Stefan's deciding goal in the shootout. The shootout featured 12 attempts between both teams.The Havoc came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Huntsville trailed 3-2 after a goal by Columbus' Tyler Henry at 16:14 in the second period. The Havoc knotted things up at 3-3 on a goal by Nolan Kaiser at 18:12 in the third period. Huntsville put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Cottonmouths to score on any of their five power plays. By firing 51 shots on goal, the Havoc exceeded the 37.0 shots they average per game this year. Huntsville was helped by Kyle McNeil, who racked up one goal. McNeil scored 15:30 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Huntsville. John McGinnis provided the assist. Huntsville also got a goal from Brett Lutes as well. In addition, Huntsville received assists from Dave Williams, Nick Schneider, John Lidgett, and Clinton Atkinson, who contributed one each. Columbus forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. The Cottonmouths surpassed its season average of 16.0 penalty minutes per game. Columbus stifled the Havoc's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Huntsville was unable to stop the Cottonmouths from sending pucks towards the net, and Columbus eventually piled up 31 shots on goal. The Cottonmouths were helped by Shawn Bates, who had one goal and one assist. Bates scored 5:53 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Columbus. Ben OQuinn picked up the assist. Columbus additionally got points from Henry, who also registered one goal and one assist. Chris Rial also scored for Columbus. More assists for Columbus came via Louis Belisle, Patrick McCadden, and Kyle Shapiro, who each chipped in one. Kevin Genoe recorded 28 saves for the Havoc. Huntsville totaled 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors and two majors and went 0-for-5 on the power play. Columbus' Shannon Szabados stopped 47 shots out of the 50 that he faced.
