Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the M1 Iowa State University Cyclones defeated the M1 Illinois ^ University of Fighting Illini in a shootout 3-2 (2-1 SO).

The shootout lasted for 18 attempts between the teams. M1 Illinois ^ University of got a shootout goal from Josh Belmont. In addition to the clincher, M1 Iowa State University got a shootout goal from Colton Kramer.

The Cyclones stifled the Fighting Illini's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. M1 Iowa State University was held below its usual level of production. The Cyclones put an average of 5.4 pucks into the net per game. M1 Iowa State University forced M1 Illinois ^ University of goalie Joe Olen to work between the pipes, taking 54 shots. The Fighting Illini forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time.
