The Waterloo Siskins beat the St. Thomas Stars, 3-1, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout. Waterloo took over the lead for good with a goal by Gary Mantz at 9:58 in the first period. An interference penalty on Carson Brookshaw had put the Siskins on the power play. Graham Evans provided the assist.Waterloo was sparked by Brett Schaefer, who finished with one goal. Schaefer scored short handed 13:02 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Waterloo. A hooking call on Matt Bourbeau put the Siskins on the penalty kill. Ryan Sparkes picked up the assist. Waterloo put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow St. Thomas to score on any of its four power plays. Luke Gazzola also scored for Waterloo. Other players who recorded assists for Waterloo were Andrew Lane, Austin Bentley, and Connor Bodnar, who each chipped in one. The Stars were held below their usual level of production. St. Thomas averages 3.9 goals per game. The Stars were led by Cal Horvat, who scored the team's only goal. Horvat scored 16:22 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Waterloo. Carson Esipu assisted on the tally. The Siskins' Mitchell Datz stopped 20 shots out of the 21 that he faced. Waterloo incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Nikolas Dampier rejected 20 shots on goal for St. Thomas. The Stars incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. |
