Slegers' goals lift Waterloo to 5-2 victory over Cambridge

The Waterloo Siskins relied on the scoring touch of Joshua Slegers, who netted two goals, to beat the Cambridge Winter Hawks, 5-2.

Slegers scored short handed at 11:37 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Waterloo and again while 19:21 into the third to make the score 5-2 Waterloo.

Waterloo forced Cambridge goalie Owen Savory to work between the pipes, taking 46 shots. The Siskins' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in three goals.

Others who scored for Waterloo included Andrew Lane, Gary Mantz, and Ryan Sparkes, who scored one goal each. In addition, Waterloo received assists from Lucas Goodman, Anthony Pullicino, and Brett Schaefer, who each chipped in one and Conner Jean and Nate Schnarr, who contributed two each.

The Winter Hawks excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. Cambridge's offense rang up 39 shots on Waterloo's net.

The Winter Hawks were helped by Alex Mutton, who registered one goal. Mutton scored on the power play 18:40 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Cambridge had taken the advantage when the Siskins' Owen Kipke got sent off for interference. Robert Proner picked up the assist. Cambridge additionally got points from Proner, who also had one goal and one assist. More assists for Cambridge came via Kyle Heitzner, who had one and Mathieu Mercier, who had two.

Waterloo's Mitchell Datz stopped 37 shots out of the 39 that he faced. The Siskins incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Savory recorded 41 saves for the Winter Hawks. Cambridge incurred 30 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
