St. Thomas shrugs off penalties, upends Lambton Shores, 7-3

The Lambton Shores Predators failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the St. Thomas Stars shook off a number of penalties to win, 7-3.

St. Thomas was led by Ethan Nother, who registered one goal and one assist. Nother scored on the power play 16:11 into the first period to make the score 1-0 St. Thomas. The Stars had gained a power play chance when Connor Merritt was whistled for cross checking. Matt McJannet picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 12:32 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

St. Thomas was often in penalty trouble, totaling six minors and three majors for 57 minutes in penalty time. The Stars had been averaging 13.0 minutes in penalties per game. St. Thomas stifled Lambton Shores' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Stars kept the Predators' goalie busy throughout the game, and Anthony Hurtubise made 41 saves on 48 shots. St. Thomas found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Stars average 4.0 goals per contest.

St. Thomas also got points from Spencer Hutchinson, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Adam Truax, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Carson Brookshaw, who also had one goal and one assist, and Andrew Chambers, who also registered one goal and one assist. St. Thomas also had goals scored by Carson Esipu and Cal Horvat, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for St. Thomas were Adam Keyes, who had two, Matt MacPherson, who had three, and Carson Moniz and Nathan Ferris, who contributed one each.

Lambton Shores forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and three majors for 47 minutes in penalty time. The Predators surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. Lambton Shores forced St. Thomas goalie Nikolas Dampier to work between the pipes, taking 31 shots. The Predators struggled on the penalty kill, allowing the Stars to score three power play goals on four chances.

Lambton Shores was helped by Gino Mini, who racked up one goal and one assist. Mini scored 14:11 into the third period to make the score 6-2 St. Thomas. Mike Zottl provided the assist. Lambton Shores additionally got points from Matthew Philip, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. More assists for Lambton Shores came via Franco Sproviero and Marcel Berube, who each chipped in one.

Dampier recorded 28 saves for St. Thomas. Team's Moniz, Hutchinson, Keyes, and Gage Stephney were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Predators registered zero goals on seven power play opportunities. For Lambton Shores, Sproviero, Berube, and Cole Braney were ejected from the contest.
