St. Catharines beats Ancaster 3-2 after comeback scare

The St. Catharines Falcons survived a determined comeback attempt by the Ancaster Avalanche on the way to a 3-2 win.

St. Catharines made the score 3-1 on a goal by Tyler Hildebrandt at 14:48 in the third period, and Ancaster got as close as 3-2 when Michael Pollice scored 18:44 into the third period.

The Falcons' penalty kill excelled, as St. Catharines gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays.

The Falcons' offense rang up 32 shots on the Avalanche's net. St. Catharines cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring three goals on five chances. The Falcons were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 34 penalty minutes.

St. Catharines additionally got points from Nicholas Dozzi, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. St. Catharines also got a goal from Broderick Kelly as well. In addition, St. Catharines received assists from Jake Evans, who had two and Justin Felker, James Guest, and Brandon Cercone, who each chipped in one.

Ancaster forced St. Catharines goalie Joel Horodziejczyk to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots.

Other players who recorded assists for Ancaster were Ben Hughes, Jesse Hilton, Max Balinson, and Cole Nagy, who contributed one each.

Joel Horodziejczyk made 36 saves for the Falcons on 38 shots. Cole Ceci recorded 29 saves for the Avalanche. Ancaster ended with 26 minutes in penalty time with three minors and two majors. For the Avalanche, Nick Gauvin and Matt Mannella were ejected from the contest.
