Caledonia beats Welland 5-4 after comeback scareHaldimand Center Sat, Jan 23, 2016 Story by Narrative Science.
The Welland Jr. Canadians tried to dig themselves out of a four-goal hole, but the Caledonia Corvairs held on for a 5-4 victory. Caledonia made the score 5-1 on a goal by Mitch Graham at 2:33 in the third period, and Welland got as close as 5-4 when Tyler Stranges scored 19:46 into the third period. Matthew Hore was all over the ice for the Corvairs, as he tallied one goal and two assists in the win. Hore scored on the power play 5:43 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Caledonia. A kneeing penalty on Brayden Crowder had put Caledonia on the power play. Jake Brown picked up the assist. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 18:58 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. The Corvairs were relatively well disciplined in the game, receiving only five minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. Caledonia finished with less than its 39.0 minutes average penalties per game. The Corvairs forced the Jr. Canadians goalie Chris Janzen to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots. Caledonia's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Corvairs are averaging 1.9 goal against for the season. Caledonia additionally got points from Brown, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Quentin Maksimovich also scored for Caledonia. Other players who recorded assists for Caledonia were Austin Brown, Ryan Punkari, Mitchell Fitzmorris, Nick Zottl, Chadd Bauman, and Corey Pawley, who each chipped in one. Others who scored for Welland included Cole Hamilton, Nathan MacDuff, and Steven Farano, who each put in one. In addition, Welland received assists from Cameron Aitken, who had two and Jack Fitzgerald, Bradey Johnson, Adam Barron, and Andy Paul, who contributed one each. Liam Conway recorded 18 saves for Caledonia. The Corvairs registered one goal on two power play opportunities. For Caledonia, Zottl and Tait Seguin were ejected from the contest. Chris Janzen made 40 saves for Welland on 45 shots. The Jr. Canadians totaled 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors and two majors and went 2-for-4 on the power play. Team's Nicholas Boehmer and Crowder were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
