Leamington beats Strathroy 4-2 after comeback scare

The Strathroy Rockets tried to dig themselves out of a four-goal hole, but the Leamington Flyers held on for a 4-2 victory.

Leamington took a 4-0 lead during the third period, only to have Strathroy storm back on a Shane Bulitka goal 13:36 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

The Flyers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Rockets to score on any of their five power plays. Leamington forced Strathroy goalie Dane Gubbels to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots.

The Flyers were helped by Liam Hogan, who tallied one goal. Hogan scored 17:45 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Leamington. Derek Elliott assisted on the tally. Leamington additionally got points from Elliott, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Leamington included Zach Guilbeault and Mark Gangnon, who scored one goal each. More assists for Leamington came via Luke Sanko, who had two and Joe Urbanic, Aaron Langlois, and Matthew Opblinger, who each chipped in one.

Strathroy also got points from Max Ewart, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Strathroy received assists from Nick Griffin and Lucas Latina, who contributed one each.

Michael Barrett made 22 saves for Leamington on 24 shots. The Flyers totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-2 on the power play. For Leamington, Scott Emerson was ejected from the game. The Rockets' Gubbels stopped 33 shots out of the 37 that he faced. Strathroy incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
