Steen's goals lift Cambridge to 4-1 victory over Brampton

The Cambridge Winter Hawks relied on the scoring touch of Matt Steen, who netted two goals, to beat the Brampton Bombers, 4-1.

Steen scored at 3:35 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cambridge and again while on the power play 10:22 into the second to make the score 2-0 Cambridge.

Cambridge was led by goalie Scott Patton, who finished with 33 saves while allowing one goal. Patton certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.5 entering the contest.

The Winter Hawks excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. Cambridge kept Brampton's goalie busy throughout the game, and Jason Rhynold made 40 saves on 44 shots.

Others who scored for Cambridge included Harlen VanWynsberghe and Matt MacKay, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Cambridge were Jonathan Giordano, who had three and Cole Cummings, Zack Hedley, Jake Beard, and Liam Hurley, who contributed one each.

The Bombers were held below their usual level of production. Brampton averages 3.1 goals per game. The Winter Hawks were unable to stop the Bombers from sending pucks towards the net, and Brampton eventually piled up 34 shots on goal. The Bombers found themselves short handed often, totaling 24 penalty minutes and allowing six power plays.

Brampton was led by Nolan Regan, who scored the team's only goal. Regan scored 3:05 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Cambridge. Joseph Spina provided the assist.

Cambridge incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Winter Hawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matt Harding was ejected from the game.
