Elliott's big game bests St. Thomas in 8-3 Leamington win

The Leamington Flyers' Derek Elliott had a big offensive game, scoring one goal and contributing three assists in his team's 8-3 win over the St. Thomas Stars.

Elliott scored 5:40 into the third period to make the score 7-2 Leamington. Luke Sanko provided the assist. Elliott dished an assist on Mitchell Crevatin's goal that made the score 3-1 Leamington at 5:03 into the second period. He then added assists on Liam Hogan's goal at 17:31 into the second and on Aaron Langlois's goal at 17:03 into the third.

Leamington forced St. Thomas' netminders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, taking 38 shots and forcing 30 saves. Nikolas Dampier made 24 stops and Dan Black made six. The Flyers surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Leamington averages 4.5 goals per game. The Flyers' penalty kill was ineffective, and let in two goals to the Stars' power play unit. Leamington got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed three goals during the game.

Leamington also got points from Langlois, who also registered one goal and one assist and Thomas Virban, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Mitchell Amante also scored for Leamington. In addition, Leamington received assists from Scott Florence, who had two, Mark Gangnon, who had five, and Cale Phibbs and Matthew Opblinger, who each chipped in one.

The Flyers were unable to stop St. Thomas from sending pucks towards the net, and the Stars eventually piled up 34 shots on goal.

St. Thomas was helped by Carter McCormick, who had one goal and one assist. McCormick scored 11:23 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Leamington. Curtis Ferreira picked up the assist. St. Thomas additionally got points from Matt McJannet, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. St. Thomas also got a goal from Ethan Nother as well. Other players who recorded assists for St. Thomas were Jake Reed, Carson Moniz, and Cal Horvat, who contributed one each.

Tyler Wall made 31 saves for Leamington on 34 shots. The Flyers incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Stars incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
