Kawalec, Schmidt dominate Brampton, lead Kitchener to 8-5 win

Behind one goal from Adam Kawalec and two goals Logan Schmidt, the Kitchener Dutchmen downed the Brampton Bombers 8-5.

Kawalec scored 3:46 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Kitchener. Mark Bzowey provided the assist. Schmidt scored the first of his two goals at 14:08 into the second period to make the score 4-4. Connor Cole picked up the assist. Schmidt's next tally made the score 5-4 Kitchener with 2:11 left in the second period. Austin Gaboury provided the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 17:53 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Kitchener forced Brampton goalie Jason Rhynold to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots. The Dutchmen's goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Kitchener averages 5.2 goals per contest. The Dutchmen's penalty kill unit could not stop the Bombers' power play, which converted on three of four opportunities. Kitchener's defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. The Dutchmen average 2.5 goals allowed per game. Kitchener's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Kitchener additionally got points from Gaboury, who also had one goal and three assists and Alex Demrovsky, who also grabbed two goals and one assist. Kitchener also had goals scored by Jason Willms and Jeremy Kuehn, who scored one goal each. In addition, Kitchener received assists from Marselis Subban and Nathan Grossi, who contributed one each.

Brampton forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 31 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 27.0 minutes per game the Bombers had been spending in the box. Brampton got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

The Bombers were helped by Jordan Oshowy, who registered two goals and one assist. Oshowy scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 4:21 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Kitchener. Brampton had gotten the advantage when the Dutchmen's Demrovsky was sent off for hooking. Mitch Shennette picked up the assist. Oshowy's next tally on the power play made the score 7-5 Kitchener with 6:42 left in the third period. An interference penalty on Taite Wirschke had put the Bombers on the power play. Yianni Liarakos assisted on the tally. Brampton also got points from Liarakos, who also finished with one goal and two assists and Carmine Vietri, who also had one goal and one assist. Mike Rehding also scored for Brampton. Other players who recorded assists for Brampton were Tayler Woolcott, Adel Zivojevic, and Patrick Zilak, who each chipped in one.

Tanner Topham rejected 12 shots on goal for Kitchener. The Dutchmen totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 1-for-6 on the power play. Kitchener ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Subban was ejected from the game. Jason Rhynold made 24 saves for Brampton on 32 shots. For the Bombers, Nick Kiriakos and Shennette were ejected from the contest.
