Brantford's comeback falls short, Guelph wins 5-4

The Guelph Hurricanes came close to giving away a three-goal lead to the Brantford 99ers, but did just enough to escape with a 5-4 victory.

Guelph led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Hurricanes' Cameron Palmer scored short handed at 13:24 in the second period to put Guelph up 3-0.

The Hurricanes were paced by Sean Power, who had one goal. Power scored short handed 17:35 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Guelph. Guelph was on a disadvantage when Ryan Burns went off the ice for hooking. Palmer picked up the assist.

The Hurricanes forced Brantford goalie Tristan Lewis to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots. Guelph got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed three goals during the game.

Guelph also got points from Palmer, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Guelph included Kevin Fitzpatrick, Chris Poletek, and Tyler Burns, who each put in one. In addition, Guelph received assists from Cameron Stokes, who had two and Stefano Pezzetta, Corson Searles, Lucas Dybowski, and Ryan Waterhouse, who contributed one each.

The 99ers' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Guelph power plays. Brantford's offense rang up 31 shots on the Hurricanes' net.

The 99ers were helped by Sheenan Kirkwood, who registered one goal. Kirkwood scored on the power play 18:32 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Guelph. An interference penalty on Liam Kendall had put Brantford on the power play. Kyle Walker assisted on the tally. Brantford additionally got points from Jack Phibbs, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Jay Dekker, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Justin Donnelly also scored for Brantford. More assists for Brantford came via Guy Polillo, Macklin McPhee, Matthew Woods, Alec Tiley, and Brandon Scanlin, who each chipped in one.

Reagan Geis recorded 27 saves for Guelph. The Hurricanes incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The 99ers' Lewis stopped 31 shots out of the 36 that he faced. Brantford incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Team's Matt Scanlin and Isaac Nurse were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
