Cambridge's comeback falls short, Elmira wins 4-2

The Elmira Sugar Kings, who led by three goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by the Cambridge Winter Hawks and clinched a 4-2 victory.

Elmira led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Sugar Kings' Mackenzie MacSorley scored at 19:07 in the third period to put Elmira up 5-2.

Quinten Bruce had two goals and two assists to lead the Sugar Kings. Bruce scored the first of his two goals at 11:32 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Mitch Montgomery provided the assist. Bruce's next tally made the score 2-1 Elmira with 5:21 left in the first period.

Elmira forced Cambridge goalie Owen Savory to work between the pipes, taking 44 shots.

Elmira additionally got points from Rob Kohli, who also racked up one goal and two assists and Zac Coulter, who also grabbed one goal and one assist.

The Winter Hawks excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. The Sugar Kings were unable to stop Cambridge from sending pucks towards the net, and the Winter Hawks eventually piled up 32 shots on goal.

Cambridge was helped by Kalob Witzell, who had one goal. Witzell scored on the power play 2:42 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Elmira. The Winter Hawks had gotten the advantage when Elmira's Ty Biles was sent off for head contact. Matt MacKay picked up the assist. Cambridge also got points from MacKay, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Cambridge came via Beau Goehrum and Matt Harding, who contributed one each.

The Sugar Kings' Liam Devine stopped 30 shots out of the 32 that he faced. Elmira incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Owen Savory made 40 saves for Cambridge on 43 shots. The Winter Hawks incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. For Cambridge, Zack Hedley was ejected from the game.
