St. Catharines survives Ancaster comeback, wins 2-1

The Ancaster Avalanche tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the St. Catharines Falcons held on for a 2-1 victory.

St. Catharines took a 2-0 lead during the third period, only to have Ancaster storm back on a Owen Burnell goal 11:25 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Falcons were sparked by Broderick Kelly, who tallied one goal. Kelly scored on the power play 8:16 into the third period to make the score 2-0 St. Catharines. St. Catharines had gained a power play chance when Fedor Gordeev was whistled for slashing. Jake Evans provided the assist.

The Falcons' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

St. Catharines also got points from Brandon Cercone, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for St. Catharines came via Jack Webb and Brett Brooker, who contributed one each.

The Avalanche were held below their usual level of production. Ancaster averages 4.7 goals per game.

In addition, Ancaster received assists from Matt Mannella and Ryan Cox, who each chipped in one.

Joel Horodziejczyk recorded 20 saves for St. Catharines. The Falcons incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with two minors. The Avalanche's Matt Calas stopped 25 shots out of the 27 that he faced. Ancaster incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
