Cambridge rides Savory to victory over Waterloo, 5-1

The Cambridge Winter Hawks relied on the sparkling performance of Owen Savory in net to grab a 5-1 win against the Waterloo Siskins.

Waterloo's power play was ineffective against Cambridge's penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

The Winter Hawks were led by Robert Proner, who tallied one goal and one assist. Proner scored on the power play 4:16 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Cambridge. Cambridge had gotten the advantage when the Siskins' Austin Bentley was sent off for roughing after whistle. Scott Del Zotto provided the assist.

The Winter Hawks excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. Waterloo was unable to stop Cambridge from sending pucks towards the net, and the Winter Hawks eventually piled up 35 shots on goal. Cambridge surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Winter Hawks average 2.6 goals per game. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Cambridge also had goals scored by Matt Steen, who had two and Kevin Lanoix and Chris Poletek, who each put in one. More assists for Cambridge came via Kalob Witzell, Zack Hedley, Jake Beard, and Alex Mutton, who contributed one each.

The Siskins forced Cambridge goalie Savory to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots.

Waterloo was led by Brett Schaefer, who scored the team's only goal. Schaefer scored 3:08 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Ryan Sparkes assisted on the tally.

The Winter Hawks' Savory stopped 35 shots out of the 36 that he faced. Cambridge totaled 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major and went 2-for-5 on the power play. For the Winter Hawks, Poletek, Raphael Lecours, and Mutton were ejected from the contest. Mitchell Datz rejected 30 shots on goal for the Siskins. Waterloo ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. The Siskins ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Luke Gazzola was ejected from the game.
