Caledonia penalty kill dominates in 4-1 defeat of Welland

Despite having to fight off several power plays, the Caledonia Corvairs were able to defeat the Welland Jr. Canadians, 4-1.

Caledonia was paced by Mitchell Fitzmorris, who tallied one goal. Fitzmorris scored 5:11 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Caledonia. Quentin Maksimovich picked up the assist.

The Corvairs were often in penalty trouble, totaling 15 minors and five majors for 65 minutes in penalty time. Caledonia surpassed its season average of 35.0 penalty minutes per game. The Corvairs forced Welland goalie Chris Janzen to work between the pipes, taking 45 shots. The defense for Caledonia tightened up when it had players in the penalty box, as it let in one goal on 12 the Jr. Canadians power plays.

Caledonia also got points from Austin Brown, who also had one goal and one assist. Caledonia also got a goal from Corey Pawley as well. More assists for Caledonia came via Mackenzie MacSorley and Jake Brown, who contributed one each and Blake Luscombe and Matthew Hore, who each chipped in two.

Welland's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 11 minors and four majors for 42 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 17.0 minutes per game the Jr. Canadians had been spending in the box.

Marc Sinclair recorded 16 saves for the Corvairs. Caledonia registered three goals on seven power play opportunities. For the Corvairs, Ryan Punkari, Matt McCartney, Jonathan Pace, Tait Seguin, and Todd Ratchford were ejected from the contest. Janzen rejected 41 shots on goal for Welland. Team's Jeff Williams, Chad Maurice, Derrick Low, Cole Hamilton, and Nicholas Boehmer were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
