Kawalec nets hat trick, leads Kitchener to 5-1 win over Cambridge

Adam Kawalec netted a hat trick to lead the Kitchener Dutchmen over the Cambridge Winter Hawks, 5-1.

Kawalec got on the scoresheet 1:03 into the first period. He then added goals at 14:49 into the third and at 18:48 into the third.

Kitchener forced Winter Hawks' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, finishing with 39 shots and forcing 34 saves. Scott Patton made 16 stops and Owen Savory made 18.

Kitchener also had goals scored by Alex Demrovsky and Jason Willms, who each put in one. In addition, Kitchener received assists from Logan Schmidt, Matthew Cruickshank, Austin Gaboury, and Taite Wirschke, who contributed one each and Connor Cole and Jeremy Kuehn, who each chipped in two.

Cambridge stifled the Dutchmen's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

The Winter Hawks were led by Scott Del Zotto, who scored the team's only goal. Del Zotto scored 13:15 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Kitchener. Alex Mutton assisted on the tally.

Kitchener's Luke Richardson stopped 19 shots out of the 20 that he faced. The Dutchmen incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Kitchener ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Demrovsky was ejected from the game. Cambridge incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. For the Winter Hawks, Robert Proner was ejected from the game.
