Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the M1 Oakland University Golden Grizzlies defeated the M1 Mercyhurst University Lakers in a shootout 4-3 (3-2 SO).

The two teams needed 16 turns to complete the shootout. M1 Mercyhurst University's shootout goals were scored by Darnell Clarke and Joseph Zinner. M1 Oakland University also got shootout goals from Ryan Rotondi and Tom Kilgore.

The Golden Grizzlies overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. M1 Oakland University trailed 3-1 after a goal by the Lakers' Kevin Valasek at 19:20 in the second period. The Golden Grizzlies tied things up at 3-3 on a goal by Ian Jacobs at 7:17 in the third period.

M1 Oakland University was led by Douglas Andrews, who grabbed one goal.

The Golden Grizzlies kept M1 Mercyhurst University's goalie busy throughout the game, and Billy Wager made 35 saves on 39 shots. M1 Oakland University struggled to stay out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 16 penalty minutes for seven opposing power plays.

Frank Saputo also scored for M1 Oakland University. In addition, M1 Oakland University received assists from Ioan Florea, Rotondi, Steven Rhodes, Kyle Nelson, Kilgore, and Spencer Stark, who each chipped in one.

The Lakers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. M1 Mercyhurst University put 28 shots on net during the contest, more than the 1.9 it averages per game. The Lakers' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as M1 Mercyhurst University finished with 16 penalty minutes. The defensemen of the Lakers were also effective in the Golden Grizzlies' zone, and came away with two goals.

M1 Mercyhurst University also got points from Michal Smid, who also registered one goal and one assist and Jesse Valasek, who also had one goal and one assist. More assists for M1 Mercyhurst University came via Zinner, who had one.
