Van Vlack nets hat trick, leads Picton to 8-4 win over Gananoque

A hat trick by Nolan Van Vlack was the highlight in Pirates' 8-4 win against the Gananoque Islanders.

Van Vlack's first goal came 6:32 into the first period. He then added goals at 8:21 into the second and at 18:23 into the third.

The Picton Pirates forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 49 minutes in penalty time. Picton had been averaging 21.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Pirates forced Gananoque's goalies to work without much rest, totaling 41 shots and forcing 33 saves. Quinn Cota made 15 stops and Paul Mazzolin made 18. Picton put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Islanders to score on any of their five power plays. The Pirates surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Picton averages 2.7 goals per game.

Picton also got points from TJ Patterson, who also had one goal and one assist, Mitchell Merry, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Nick Devito, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. Others who scored for Picton included James Pero and Trey Maracle, who scored one goal each. More assists for Picton came via Mitch Thompson, who had three and Matthew Panetta, Liam Hunter, and Mitch Burke, who each chipped in one.

Gananoque's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and one major for 57 minutes in penalty time. The Islanders surpassed its season average of 17.0 penalty minutes per game. Gananoque forced the Pirates goalie Charles Grimard to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots.

The Islanders were helped by Connor Smith, who finished with one goal. Smith scored 19:33 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Picton. Nick Maillett APM assisted on the tally. Gananoque additionally got points from Maillett APM, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Gananoque also had goals scored by Patrick Lyster and Phil Smith, who each put in one. In addition, Gananoque received assists from Craig Cross and Drew Marquette, who contributed one each.

Grimard rejected 36 shots on goal for Picton. The Pirates registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Picton ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Thompson was ejected from the game. For Gananoque, Cross and Cole Serson were ejected from the contest.
