Smith lifts Port Hope over Picton, 8-1

Mike Smith was all over the ice for the Port Hope Panthers, as he tallied two goals in Port Hope's 8-1 win over the Picton Pirates.

Smith scored at 3:09 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Port Hope and again while 12:00 into the first to make the score 4-0 Port Hope.

The Panthers forced Picton's netminders to work all game long, launching 42 shots and forcing 34 saves. Dustin Myskiw made six stops and Charles Grimard made 28. Port Hope's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Picton power plays. The Panthers' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Port Hope averages 5.5 goals per contest.

Port Hope also got points from Dan Lagrois, who also registered two goals and one assist, Dalton Lawrence, who also finished with one goal and one assist, and Shawn Mackie, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Port Hope also had goals scored by Andrew Gurr and Phil Koufis, who scored one goal each. More assists for Port Hope came via Evan Foley, who had three, Matthew Hunt, Josh Geruais, Ben Grieve, and Matthew Cavanaugh, who each chipped in one, and Cameron McGill and Evan Wasylyk, who contributed two each.

The Pirates found themselves stymied offensively, and got off a mere 13 shots against the Panthers' defense. Picton was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 60 penalty minutes.

Nolan Van Vlack also scored for Picton. In addition, Picton received assists from TJ Patterson and Gerald Bilker, who each chipped in one.

Sheldon Calbury made 12 saves for Port Hope on 13 shots. The Panthers incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. For the Pirates, Mitchell Merry was ejected from the game.
