Brantford hangs on, beats Thorold 3-1

Derek Medeiros scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, and the Brantford Blast held off the challenges of the Thorold Athletics in a tough 3-1 win.

Brantford took over the lead for good with a goal by Medeiros at 17:28 in the first period. Dustin Alcock assisted on the tally.

The Blast got the win on the strength of a great game by Medeiros, who had two goals and one assist.

Brantford was led by goalie Anthony Marshall, who finished with 36 saves while allowing one goal. Marshall certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.88 entering the contest.

Brantford also got points from Cameron Sault, who also had one goal and one assist.

Thorold stifled the Blast's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Athletics' offense operated below their season average. Thorold puts an average of 4.6 pucks into the net per game. The Athletics forced Brantford goalie Marshall to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots.

Thorold was led by Chris Risi, who scored the team's only goal. Risi scored on the power play 13:08 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Brantford. A delay of game penalty on Marshall had put the Athletics on the power play. Jay Hill picked up the assist.

The Blast incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Frank Novello rejected 18 shots on goal for Thorold. The Athletics incurred 28 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
