Dundas falls apart in second, loses to Whitby, 9-1

The Whitby Dunlops scored four goals in the second period to pull away from the Dundas Real McCoys and clinch a 9-1 win.

Whitby got the win thanks to a great game by Darren Doherty, who had two goals and one assist. Doherty scored the first of his two goals at 18:26 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Whitby. Shane Terry picked up the assist. Doherty's next tally made the score 5-1 Whitby with 6:59 left in the second period. The Dunlops had gained a power play chance when Derek Matheson was whistled for holding. Adam Van Dam provided the assist.

Whitby was led by goalie Jason Guy, who finished with 25 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Guy will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.95.

The Dunlops forced Real McCoys' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, taking 44 shots and forcing 35 saves. Neil Clelland made 23 stops and Brock Novak made 12. Whitby outdid its season average for goals scored. The Dunlops have scored at the pace of 5.7 goals per game during the current campaign. Whitby took advantage of Dundas' penalties, tallying two goals off of three power play opportunities.

Whitby additionally got points from Scott Freeman, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Whitby also got a goal from Marcus Carroll as well. More assists for Whitby came via Peter MacKellar, Patrick Jobb, and Jason Dale, who each chipped in two.

The Real McCoys were held below their usual level of production. Dundas puts an average of 4.0 pucks into the net per game.

The Real McCoys were led by Cam Watson, who scored the team's only goal. Watson scored on the power play 9:00 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Dundas had gotten the advantage when the Dunlops' Will Jones was sent off for interference. Chris Hulit picked up the assist.

Whitby incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Real McCoys incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
