M1 Niagara University beats M1 Canisius College 3-2 after comeback scare

The M1 Canisius College Golden Griffins tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the M1 Niagara University Purple Eagles would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 3-2.

A goal by Josh Pietrantonio put M1 Niagara University up 3-1 in the third period, but M1 Canisius College pulled to within one on Jess Hackett's tally 15:33 into the third period.

The Purple Eagles pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 24 penalty minutes.

M1 Niagara University put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Golden Griffins to score on any of their seven power plays. The Purple Eagles kept M1 Canisius College's goalie busy throughout the game, and Hiroyasu Takahashi made 39 saves on 42 shots.

M1 Niagara University additionally got points from Andrew Mitch, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Nick Smith also scored for M1 Niagara University. Other players who recorded assists for M1 Niagara University were Matthew Janketic and matthew Bavaro, who contributed one each.

The Golden Griffins' offense operated below their season average. M1 Canisius College averages 4.5 goals per game. The 42 shots that the Golden Griffins put on net surpassed M1 Canisius College's average of 0.2 shots per game this season.

M1 Canisius College also got a goal from Matthew Muszynski as well. In addition, M1 Canisius College received assists from Jesse Caulkins, who had one.

Mike Parda recorded 40 saves for M1 Niagara University. The Purple Eagles registered two goals on four power play opportunities. The Golden Griffins incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
