GAME RECAP

Wheatley boosted by Morneau's play in net, beats Blenheim 3-1

Wheatley Area Arena    Mon, Jan 18, 2016

The Wheatley Omstead Sharks relied on the sparkling performance of Eric Morneau in net to grab a 3-1 win against the Blenheim Blades.

Wheatley's penalty kill excelled, as the Omstead Sharks gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

Wheatley was led by Jack Leafeve, who finished with one goal. Leafeve scored on the power play 8:32 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Wheatley. The Omstead Sharks had gained a power play chance when Bryce Broad was whistled for roughing. Brett Bowman picked up the assist.

Wheatley stifled Blenheim's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Omstead Sharks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 18 minutes in penalties during the game.

Others who scored for Wheatley included Mitchell Prudence and Andreas Gossmann, who each put in one. In addition, Wheatley received assists from Brian Johnson and Nick Tavolieri-Essex, who each chipped in one.

The Blades racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 21.0 minutes per game Blenheim had been spending in the box. The Blades' offense operated below their season average. Blenheim averages 4.1 goals per game. The Blades forced Wheatley goalie Morneau to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

Blenheim was led by Matt Clark, who scored the team's only goal. Clark scored 4:49 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Blenheim. Dustin Maines assisted on the tally.

Morneau recorded 33 saves for the Omstead Sharks. Wheatley registered two goals on 11 power play opportunities. The Blades' Klinton Kenney stopped 19 shots out of the 21 that he faced. Blenheim ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Drew Marlatt was ejected from the game.
