Port Dover survives Niagara comeback, wins 5-3

The Niagara Riverhawks tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Port Dover Sailors would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-3.

Port Dover made the score 5-2 on a goal by Eric O`Keefe at 9:36 in the third period, and Niagara got as close as 5-3 when Andrew Somerville scored 9:49 into the third period.

O`Keefe was all over the ice for the Sailors, as he tallied one goal and three assists in the win.

The Riverhawks were unable to stop Port Dover from sending pucks towards the net, and the Sailors eventually piled up 48 shots on goal.

Port Dover also got points from Eric Mueller, who also had one goal and one assist and Braden Roberts, who also registered one goal and two assists. Port Dover also had goals scored by Brad Johnson and Michael Boateng, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Port Dover were Michael Almas and Steve Goeree, who each chipped in two.

Niagara's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and one major for 43 minutes in penalty time. The Riverhawks surpassed its season average of 25.0 penalty minutes per game.

Niagara was led by Dawson Ethier, who racked up one goal and one assist. Ethier scored on the power play 15:29 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Port Dover. The Riverhawks had gotten the advantage when Port Dover's Chad Carey was sent off for tripping. Matt Somerville picked up the assist. Niagara additionally got points from Somerville, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Niagara also got a goal from Brandon McLean as well. More assists for Niagara came via Danny Gallagher, Ryan Degiuli, and Alex Cipriano, who contributed one each.

Riley Edwards made 15 saves for the Sailors on 18 shots. Port Dover totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 2-for-7 on the power play. For the Sailors, Colton McLeod was ejected from the game. Sebastian Iannone recorded 43 saves for Niagara. The Riverhawks registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Niagara ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Alex Gonyou was ejected from the game.
