Niagara holds on for 7-5 win against Simcoe

The Niagara Riverhawks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Simcoe Storm on the way to a 7-5 win.

Niagara made the score 7-4 on a goal by Alex Cipriano at 14:42 in the third period, and Simcoe got as close as 7-5 when CJ Tomlinson scored 15:04 into the third period.

The Riverhawks got the win thanks to a great game by Brandon McLean, who had two goals and three assists. McLean scored the first of his two goals at 5:18 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Simcoe. Scott Charanduk assisted on the tally. McLean's next tally made the score 3-3 with 11:12 left in the second period. An interference penalty on Austin Lamb had put Niagara on the power play. Danny Gallagher picked up the assist.

The Storm were unable to stop the Riverhawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Niagara eventually piled up 37 shots on goal. The Riverhawks surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, Niagara averages 4.1 goals per contest. The Riverhawks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 26 minutes in penalties during the game. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Niagara additionally got points from Cipriano, who also tallied three goals and one assist. Niagara also got a goal from Alex Gonyou as well. More assists for Niagara came via Dawson Ethier and Ryan Donavan APM, who each chipped in one.

Simcoe forced Niagara goalie Charanduk to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots. The Storm's goal total was higher than their season average. Simcoe averages 1.8 goal per game. The Storm's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Simcoe finished with 40 penalty minutes.

The Storm were helped by Alexander Polillo, who grabbed two goals and one assist. Polillo scored the first of his two goals at 12:55 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Simcoe. Bradley Stitt assisted on the tally. Polillo's next tally made the score 2-1 Simcoe with 3:59 left in the first period. Tyson Mike picked up the assist. Simcoe also got points from Mike, who also registered one goal and two assists. Zak Culbert also scored for Simcoe. In addition, Simcoe received assists from Kevin Cameron and Darren Lynch, who contributed one each.

Charanduk recorded 27 saves for the Riverhawks. Niagara registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. Nathen McKinnon made 30 saves for Simcoe on 37 shots. The Storm registered one goal on six power play opportunities. For Simcoe, Stitt was ejected from the game.
