Hagersville holds on for 4-3 win against Niagara

The Hagersville Hawks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Niagara Riverhawks on the way to a 4-3 win.

Hagersville made the score 4-1 on a goal by Derek Friesen at 13:52 in the second period, and Niagara got as close as 4-3 when Jamie Bennett scored 9:27 into the third period.

The Hawks got the win with help from a great game by Dan Mederios, who had one goal and two assists. Mederios scored 15:44 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Hagersville. MIchael Arch picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 5:27 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Hagersville stifled the Riverhawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Hawks kept Niagara's goalie busy throughout the game, and Sebastian Iannone made 29 saves on 33 shots.

Hagersville additionally got points from Friesen, who also tallied two goals and one assist. Hagersville also got a goal from Justin Fletcher as well. More assists for Hagersville came via Brayden Hill and Cole Dezainne, who contributed one each.

The Riverhawks racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. Niagara surpassed its season average of 27.0 penalty minutes per game. Hagersville was unable to stop the Riverhawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Niagara eventually piled up 41 shots on goal.

Niagara also got points from Robert Shaw, who also registered one goal and one assist. Bailey Sowrey also scored for Niagara. In addition, Niagara received assists from Dante Zawadzki, who had three and Shawn Epp and Alex Gonyou, who each chipped in one.

The Hawks' Stephen Tierney stopped 38 shots out of the 41 that he faced. Hagersville totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 2-for-6 on the power play. The Hawks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jordy Land was ejected from the game. The Riverhawks registered zero goals on four power play opportunities. For Niagara, Lucas Marcon was ejected from the game.
