West Michigan survives Southern Tier comeback, wins 6-4

West Michigan came close to giving away a three-goal lead to Southern Tier, but did just enough to escape with a 6-4 victory.

West Michigan led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when West Michigan's Curtis Carlson scored on the power play at 19:13 in the second period to put West Michigan up 5-2.

Devin Farkas had two goals to lead West Michigan to victory. Farkas scored on the power play at 18:32 into the first period to make the score 2-2 and again while 10:15 into the third to make the score 6-4 West Michigan.

West Michigan's penalty kill excelled, as West Michigan gave up one goal despite allowing 11 power plays.

West Michigan forced Southern Tier's goalies to work without much rest, taking 55 shots and forcing 49 saves. Timothy OSullivan made 39 stops and Ryan Pascarella made 10. West Michigan outdid its season average for goals scored. This season, West Michigan averages 3.7 goals per contest. West Michigan was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 36 penalty minutes.

West Michigan also got points from Carlson, who also had one goal and one assist. Trevor Temple also scored for West Michigan. Other players who recorded assists for West Michigan were Zach Hand, Gabe Smith, Mitch Kalleward, Dakota Ulmer, Mitch Campbell, and Brandon Benaglio, who each chipped in one and Ryan Price and Corey Siwula, who contributed two each.

Southern Tier could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

Southern Tier was helped by Nathan Butkowski, who registered one goal. Butkowski scored on the power play 6:15 into the third period to make the score 5-3 West Michigan. A high sticking penalty on Brendon Block had put Southern Tier on the power play. Jacob Tota picked up the assist. Southern Tier also had goals scored by Joshua Malin, Brian Brown, and Jacob St. Andre, who scored one goal each. More assists for Southern Tier came via Cameron Pries, who had two and Brad Delenko, Joseph Gerace, Philip Grippi, and Devin Laird, who each chipped in one.

Maxwell Barr rejected 23 shots on goal for West Michigan. West Michigan registered two goals on 10 power play opportunities.
