Pittsburgh uses shootout to best Toledo, 3-2 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as Pittsburgh defeated Toledo in a shootout 3-2 (2-1 SO).

The shootout lasted for five attempts between the teams. Toledo's shootout goal was scored by Austin Turner. Pittsburgh's other shootout goal was scored by Camron Smith.

Pittsburgh came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Pittsburgh was down 2-1 after a power play goal by Toledo's Josh Somers at 10:17 in the third period. Pittsburgh knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Nicholas Lyon at 16:08 in the third period.

Pittsburgh was led by James Unger, who had one goal. Unger scored on the power play 1:04 into the third period to make the score 1-1. Connor Ackerman picked up the assist.

Pittsburgh forced Toledo goalie Cody Gibson to work between the pipes, taking 44 shots.

Pittsburgh also got points from Lyon, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Pittsburgh were Anthony Szurlej and Kenny White, who each chipped in one.

Pittsburgh was unable to stop Toledo from sending pucks towards the net, and Toledo eventually piled up 48 shots on goal. Toledo could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

In addition, Toledo received assists from Dan Hudy, Isaiah Crawford, and Nick Papandrea, who contributed one each.

Pittsburgh's Marcus Gloss stopped 46 shots out of the 48 that he faced. Pittsburgh incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Cody Gibson made 41 saves for Toledo on 43 shots. Toledo registered one goal on two power play opportunities.
