Pittsburgh uses early goal to top Southern Tier, 1-0

Nicholas Lyon scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, and Pittsburgh held off the challenges of Southern Tier in a tough 1-0 win.

Lyon provided Pittsburgh with the game-winning tally when he scored 8:04 into the first period. Vincent Casale assisted on the tally.

Pittsburgh was boosted by Marcus Gloss, who turned in a shutout with 28 saves. Gloss certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.4 entering the contest.

Pittsburgh was sparked by Lyon, who grabbed one goal.

Pittsburgh's defense was surprisingly good. Pittsburgh averages 3.0 goals allowed per game. Pittsburgh's offense rang up 31 shots on Southern Tier's net.

In addition, Pittsburgh received assists from Adam Schaffer, who had one.

Southern Tier put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Pittsburgh to score on any of its three power plays. Southern Tier was held below its usual level of production. Southern Tier puts an average of 2.3 pucks into the net per game.

Pittsburgh ended with 21 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. Pittsburgh ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and James Unger was ejected from the game. Southern Tier's Ryan Pascarella stopped 30 shots out of the 31 that he faced. Southern Tier incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
