Brampton Thunder uses shootout to best Calgary Inferno, 8-7 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as Brampton Thunder defeated Calgary Inferno in a shootout 8-7 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured six attempts between both teams.

Brampton Thunder came back from a four-goal deficit to capture the victory. Brampton Thunder fell behind 5-1 after a power play goal by Calgary Inferno's Brittany Esposito at 3:51 in the second period. Brampton Thunder knotted things up at 7-7 on a power play goal by Laura Fortino at 17:35 in the third period.

Fortino had two goals and one assist to lead Brampton Thunder. Fortino scored the first of her two goals at 10:18 into the third period to make the score 7-6 Calgary Inferno. Kristen Richards assisted on the tally. Fortino's next tally made the score 7-7 with 2:25 left in the third period. A slashing penalty on Erica Kromm had put Brampton Thunder on the power play. Courtney Birchard picked up the assist.

Brampton Thunder forced Calgary Inferno's netminders to work all game long, taking 35 shots and forcing 27 saves. Kathy Desjardins made 11 stops and Delayne Brian made 16. Brampton Thunder surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, Brampton Thunder averages 3.8 goals per contest. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with three goals.

Brampton Thunder additionally got points from Becca King, who also had one goal and one assist and Birchard, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Jamie Lee Rattray also scored for Brampton Thunder. More assists for Brampton Thunder came via Fielding Montgomery, who had one and Rebecca Vint, who had two.

Calgary Inferno forced Brampton Thunder's goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, getting 44 shots and forcing 37 saves. Liz Knox made 30 stops and Erica Howe made seven. Calgary Inferno found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Calgary Inferno has scored at the pace of 4.6 goals per game during the current campaign. Calgary Inferno could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game.

Calgary Inferno was helped by Jill Saulnier, who racked up two goals. Saulnier scored the first of her two goals at 28 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Calgary Inferno. Brigitte Lacquette assisted on the tally. Saulnier's next tally made the score 4-1 Calgary Inferno with 19:20 left in the second period. Jessica Campbell picked up the assist. Calgary Inferno also got points from Esposito, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Jenna Cunningham, who also had one goal and one assist, Elana Lovell, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Blayre Turnbull, who also had one goal and one assist. Calgary Inferno also got a goal from Brianne Jenner as well. In addition, Calgary Inferno received assists from Bailey Bram and Hayleigh Cudmore, who contributed one each.

Brampton Thunder incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Calgary Inferno registered two goals on four power play opportunities.
