Pembroke hangs on, beats Cumberland 2-1Navan Memorial Centre Fri, Oct 02, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
The Pembroke Lumber Kings took the lead against the Cumberland Grads in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 2-1 victory. A goal 7:07 into the first period by Tyler ONeill proved to be the game winner, and powered Pembroke to the victory. Stephen Cooney picked up the assist.Cumberland was stymied by the Lumber Kings' netminder Sean Green, who stopped 35 shots during the victory. Green managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.85 prior to the game. Pembroke's penalty kill excelled, as the Lumber Kings gave up one goal despite allowing 10 power plays. Pembroke forced the Grads goalie Ryan Coughlin to work between the pipes, taking 46 shots. The Lumber Kings could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game. Pembroke was helped by Cameron Hughes, who grabbed one goal. Hughes scored 4:02 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Pembroke. Chris Minns provided the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Pembroke were Colton Keuhl and Cale List, who contributed one each. Cumberland excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. The Grads could not produce up to their normal offensive output. Cumberland puts an average of 4.0 pucks into the net per game. The Lumber Kings were unable to stop the Grads from sending pucks towards the net, and Cumberland eventually piled up 36 shots on goal. The Grads were led by Branden Makara, who scored the team's only goal. Makara scored on the power play 6:47 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Pembroke. Cumberland earned a power play opportunity when Keuhl was put in the box for handling the puck. Grant Hebert picked up the assist. Ryan Coughlin made 44 saves for the Grads on 46 shots. Cumberland incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. For the Grads, Shawn Cameron and Simon Besner were ejected from the contest.
