Markham shrugs off penalties, upends Stouffville, 6-3

The Markham Royals, which found themselves down a man often, weathered the Stouffville Spirit's power play opportunities and emerged with a 6-3 victory.

Markham was led by Sean Perichak, who had one goal. Perichak scored on the power play 1:18 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Markham. The Royals had taken the advantage when Stouffville's Sam Hu got sent off for high sticking. Aaron Spivak assisted on the tally.

In a losing effort, the Spirit were led by Nathan Hudgin, who tallied two goals. Hudgin scored the first of his two goals at 17:15 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Stouffville. Hu picked up the assist. Hudgin's next tally made the score 4-3 Markham with 14:13 left in the third period. Stouffville had gained a power play chance when Joel Knight was whistled for slashing. Hu provided the assist.

Markham forced the Spirit goalie Aaron Taylor to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots. The Royals surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Markham averages 3.6 goals per game. The Royals could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 20 minutes in penalties during the game.

Markham also got points from Brendan Valko, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Markham also had goals scored by Lucas Condotta, who had two and Jeff Joynt and Rylee St. Onge, who each put in one. More assists for Markham came via Tyson Bruce, who had two and Matthew Dunlop, Brandon Washer, Joseph Teofilo, and Marco Azzano, who contributed one each.

Zachary Roberts also scored for Stouffville. In addition, Stouffville received assists from Calvin Martin, Christopher Brill-Morgan, Jackson Savery, and Ryan DaSilva, who each chipped in one.

Markham's Scott Smith stopped 25 shots out of the 28 that he faced. The Royals registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Aaron Taylor made 26 saves for Stouffville on 32 shots. The Spirit incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
