Whitby beats Buffalo 5-4 after comeback scare

The Whitby Fury survived a determined comeback attempt by the Buffalo Jr. Sabres on the way to a 5-4 win.

Whitby took a 5-0 lead during the second period, only to have Buffalo storm back on a David Baskerville goal 19:36 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Fury were helped by Steven Elliott, who finished with three goals. Whitby also had goals scored by Nik Coric and Jeffrey Gauld, who scored one goal each. In addition, Whitby received assists from Zack Fisher, who had three and Jacob Durham, Ryan Porter, Brock Welsh, Ian McKinnon, and S Bull, who contributed one each.

The Jr. Sabres forced Whitby goalie Daniel Mannella to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.

Buffalo additionally got points from Aaron Reinig, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Zach Evancho also scored for Buffalo. Other players who recorded assists for Buffalo were Ryan Wheeler, who had two and Tim Nicksic, Christopher Berger, Andrew Pizzo, Brenden Dunning, and Dylan Seitz, who each chipped in one.

Mannella recorded 30 saves for the Fury. Whitby incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. For the Fury, McKinnon was ejected from the game. Tucker Weppner rejected 19 shots on goal for Buffalo. The Jr. Sabres incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
