Whitby downs Cobourg in overtime, 5-4 (OT)Iroquois - Rink#1 Tue, Jan 26, 2016 Story by Narrative Science.
The Whitby Fury's Scott Kirton scored 2:51 into overtime to beat the Cobourg Cougars, 5-4 (OT). Although Whitby was up by as many as two goals in the second period, Cobourg kept the game interesting by staging a comeback that ultimately fell short. The Cougars got to within 4-3 on a goal by Matt Carroll at 13:18 in the third period. Cobourg was unable to stop the Fury from sending pucks towards the net, and Whitby eventually piled up 33 shots on goal. Whitby additionally got points from Ryan Heeps, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Jacob Durham also scored for Whitby. In addition, Whitby received assists from Greg Allen, Rylee McKinnon, and Justin Brand, who contributed one each and Nik Coric, Kennedy Duguid, and Ryan Taylor, who each chipped in two. The Cougars' offense rang up 35 shots on the Fury's net. Cobourg was helped by Liam Grande, who registered two goals. Grande scored the first of his two goals at 8:00 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Rory Milne assisted on the tally. Grande's next tally made the score 2-1 Cobourg with 15:59 left in the second period. Josh Hopkin picked up the assist. Cobourg also got points from Carroll, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Mac Lowry, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Cobourg were Ryan Casselman, who had one and Brennan Roy, who had two. Daniel Mannella made 31 saves for Whitby on 35 shots. The Fury incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. The Cougars' Stefano Durante stopped 28 shots out of the 33 that he faced. Cobourg incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
