Newmarket blows out Pickering, 6-1

The Newmarket Hurricanes were firing on all cylinders against the Pickering Panthers, and when the final buzzer sounded Hurricanes emerged with a 6-1 win.

Pickering was stymied by Newmarket's netminder Connor Ryckman, who stopped 25 shots during the victory. Ryckman managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.14 prior to the game.

The Hurricanes were led by Max Routledge, who had one goal. Routledge scored 15:04 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Newmarket. Todd Winder assisted on the tally.

Newmarket put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Panthers to score on any of their five power plays. The Hurricanes outdid their season average for goals scored. This season, Newmarket averages 2.6 goals per contest.

Newmarket also got points from Ryan Young, who also registered one goal and two assists. Newmarket also got a goal from Marty Lawlor as well. More assists for Newmarket came via Nick Kalpousos, Mitchell Duggan, Christian Dedonato, Nicholas Favaro, and Mark Rozanov, who each chipped in one and Marco Bozzo and Christian Cella, who contributed two each.

Pickering forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 10 minors and one major for 35 minutes in penalty time. The Panthers surpassed its season average of 23.0 penalty minutes per game. Pickering was held below its usual level of production. The Panthers put an average of 3.2 pucks into the net per game.

Pickering was led by Kennedy Duguid, who scored the team's only goal. Duguid scored 3:01 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Newmarket. Justin Bennett picked up the assist.

The Hurricanes incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Troy Paquette made 23 saves for the Panthers on 29 shots. For Pickering, Robert Clark was ejected from the game.
