Newmarket falls apart in second, loses to Markham, 5-0

The Markham Royals used a three-goal second period to put away the Newmarket Hurricanes, 5-0.

Nathan Colitto spearheaded the defensive effort for Markham, as he did not allow a puck past him and made 29 saves for the shutout. The solid play of Colitto will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.24.

The Royals' penalty kill excelled, as Markham gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

The Royals stifled Newmarket's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Markham's defensive play was more effective than usual against the Hurricanes. The Royals allow 2.5 goals per game. Markham's offense rang up 45 shots on Newmarket's net.

The Royals were helped by Marco Azzano, who tallied one goal. Azzano scored 19:58 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Markham. Jason OConnor picked up the assist. Markham also had goals scored by Anthony Filoso, Rylee St. Onge, Joel Knight, and Tyson Bruce, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Markham were Brendan Valko, Shawn Tessier, Cameron Lamport, Aaron Spivak, Trevor Abbot, and Nick Thomakos, who each chipped in one.

The Hurricanes were held below their usual level of production. Newmarket puts an average of 2.4 pucks into the net per game.

Markham incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Connor Ryckman made 40 saves for the Hurricanes on 45 shots. Newmarket incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
