Whitby falls to Pickering in overtime, 5-4 (OT)

The Pickering Panthers' Kyle Gentles scored 2:59 into overtime to beat the Whitby Fury, 5-4 (OT).

Pickering nearly gave up a two-score lead. The Panthers made it 4-2 on a goal by Kevin Ounjian at 18:58 in the second period. Whitby got to within 4-3 on a goal by Luke Keenan at 6:43 in the third period.

Gentles had a great game for Pickering, netting two goals.

The Panthers' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Whitby power plays. Pickering kept the Fury's goalie busy throughout the game, and Daniel Mannella made 35 saves on 40 shots. The Panthers got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed three goals during the game.

Pickering additionally got points from Doug Carter, who also had one goal and one assist. Pickering also got a goal from Chris Sekelyk as well. In addition, Pickering received assists from Justin Bennett, who had two and Mackenzie Heber, Tomas Azzano, John Hudgin, Brendan Browne, Davis Kuksis, and Tiger McDonald, who each chipped in one.

Whitby stifled Pickering's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Fury forced the Panthers goalie Mathew Woroniuk to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots.

Whitby also got points from Brock Welsh, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Justin Brand, who also registered one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Whitby were Scott Kirton, who had three and Steven Elliott and Jacob Durham, who contributed one each.

Mathew Woroniuk made 33 saves for Pickering on 37 shots. The Panthers incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors. Whitby incurred 38 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
