Newmarket survives Markham comeback, wins 3-2

The Newmarket Hurricanes survived a determined comeback attempt by the Markham Royals on the way to a 3-2 win.

Newmarket took a 3-1 lead during the third period, only to have Markham storm back on a Tyson Bruce goal 18:00 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

The Hurricanes were led by Marty Lawlor, who tallied one goal. Lawlor scored 12:07 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Newmarket. Marco Bozzo picked up the assist.

Newmarket stifled the Royals' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

Others who scored for Newmarket included Max Routledge and James Mense-Dietrich, who each put in one. In addition, Newmarket received assists from Curtis Harvey and Nicholas Favaro, who each chipped in one.

Markham put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Hurricanes to score on any of their five power plays. The Royals kept Newmarket's goalie busy throughout the game, and Connor Ryckman made 30 saves on 32 shots.

Markham also got a goal from Rylee St. Onge as well. More assists for Markham came via Marco Azzano, Trevor Abbot, and Hudson Michaelis, who contributed one each.

The Hurricanes incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Nathan Colitto made 22 saves for Markham on 25 shots. The Royals incurred 40 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
