Whitby beats Newmarket 2-0 as Mannella gains shutout

Daniel Mannella recorded a shutout against the Newmarket Hurricanes as the Whitby Fury picked up a 2-0 win.

Whitby was paced by Kevin Dimagno, who registered one goal and one assist. Dimagno scored on the power play 4:08 into the third period to make the score 1-0 Whitby. The Fury had gained a power play chance when Christian Cella was whistled for hooking. Zach Viminitz provided the assist.

Whitby forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20.0 minutes per game the Fury had been spending in the box. Whitby excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in five chances. The Fury's offense rang up 34 shots on Newmarket's net.

Whitby additionally got points from Viminitz, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Whitby were Nik Coric, who had two.

The Hurricanes were held below their usual level of production. Newmarket averages 2.7 goals per game.

Mannella rejected 27 shots on goal for Whitby. The Fury registered one goal on three power play opportunities. For Whitby, Ian McKinnon was ejected from the game. Connor Ryckman recorded 32 saves for the Hurricanes. Newmarket incurred 28 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
