Stouffville beats Cobourg 3-2 after comeback scare

The Stouffville Spirit survived a determined comeback attempt by the Cobourg Cougars on the way to a 3-2 win.

Stouffville made the score 3-0 on a goal by James Mense-Dietrich at 8:10 in the second period, and Cobourg got as close as 3-2 when Brennan Roy scored 14:56 into the third period.

The Spirit's penalty kill excelled, as Stouffville gave up zero goals despite allowing 14 power plays.

The Spirit stifled the Cougars' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Stouffville was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 48 penalty minutes.

The Spirit were helped by Nathan Hudgin, who finished with one goal. Hudgin scored 52 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Stouffville. Robert Clark provided the assist. Stouffville also got a goal from Spencer Roberts as well.

Cobourg put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Stouffville to score on any of its four power plays. The Cougars did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. Cobourg averages 4.4 goals per game. The Cougars' offense rang up 37 shots on the Spirit's net.

Cobourg was helped by Theo Lewis, who grabbed one goal. Lewis scored short handed 17:49 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Stouffville. The Cougars found themselves down a man on Anthony Salemi's holding. Josh Hopkin picked up the assist. In addition, Cobourg received assists from Brenden Locke, who had one.

Stouffville's Aaron Taylor stopped 35 shots out of the 37 that he faced. The Spirit ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kyle Thomas was ejected from the game. Stefano Durante rejected 20 shots on goal for Cobourg. The Cougars incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
