Thomakos lifts Markham over Stouffville, 4-1

Nick Thomakos had two goals to lead the Markham Royals to a 4-1 victory over the Stouffville Spirit.

Thomakos' tallies came at 16:58 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and on the power play 4:07 into the third to make the score 3-1 Markham.

Stouffville was stymied by Markham's netminder Nathan Colitto, who stopped 26 shots during the victory. Colitto certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 1.96 entering the contest.

The Royals' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Stouffville power plays. Markham's offense rang up 33 shots on the Spirit's net. The Royals could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 24 minutes in penalties during the game.

Others who scored for Markham included Jeff Joynt and Rylee St. Onge, who each put in one. In addition, Markham received assists from Matthew Dunlop, Khadyn Butterfly, Hudson Michaelis, and Joel Knight, who each chipped in one and Lucas Condotta and Aaron Spivak, who contributed two each.

Stouffville was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 58 penalty minutes.

The Spirit were led by Nathan Hudgin, who scored the team's only goal. Hudgin scored 37 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Stouffville. James Mense-Dietrich picked up the assist.

Markham registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. Aaron Taylor made 29 saves for Stouffville on 32 shots. The Spirit ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jonathan Yaremko was ejected from the game.
