Elmira beats Waterloo 4-2 after comeback scare

The Waterloo Siskins tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Elmira Sugar Kings held on for a 4-2 victory.

A goal by Rob Kohli put Elmira up 4-1 in the third period, but Waterloo pulled to within two on Michael Romund's tally 14:15 into the third period.

The win gave the Sugar Kings a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Brendan Schneider had one goal and two assists to lead Elmira. Schneider scored 13:24 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Elmira. Zac Coulter picked up the assist.

The Sugar Kings put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Siskins to score on any of their four power plays. Elmira forced Waterloo goalie Evgeny Kiselev to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots.

Elmira also got points from Coulter, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Klayton Hoelscher also scored for Elmira. Other players who recorded assists for Elmira were Brodie Whitehead, who had two and Alex Mutton, Mac Clutsam, and Connor Hall, who contributed one each.

The Siskins' offense rang up 35 shots on the Sugar Kings' net.

Waterloo was helped by Connor Bodnar, who grabbed one goal. Bodnar scored 4:55 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Luke Gazzola provided the assist. More assists for Waterloo came via Christian Mroczkowski, Kyle Betts, and Danny Hanlon, who each chipped in one.

Jonathan Reinhart recorded 33 saves for Elmira. The Sugar Kings incurred 30 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Kiselev rejected 33 shots on goal for the Siskins. Waterloo incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors.
