Texas survives Topeka comeback, wins 6-5

The Texas Jr. Brahmas came close to giving away a three-goal lead to the Topeka Capitals, but did just enough to escape with a 6-5 victory.

Texas led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Jr. Brahmas' Devin Pierce scored on the power play at 9:50 in the second period to put Texas up 4-1.

After the loss made the series score 1-0 in the best of three series, Topeka faces elimination next time out.

Nick Ford had one goal and two assists to lead the Jr. Brahmas. Ford scored 11:02 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Sam Gagnon picked up the assist.

In a losing effort, the Capitals were sparked by Trey Opack, who registered two goals. Opack scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 13:59 into the second period to make the score 4-3 Texas. Topeka had taken the advantage when Texas' Ryan Dunner got sent off for roughing. Kyle Rimbach provided the assist. Opack's next tally on the power play made the score 4-4 with 4:17 left in the second period. Tre Kautzman picked up the assist.

The Jr. Brahmas cashed in on power play opportunities, scoring two goals on three chances.

Texas additionally got points from Jon Grimm, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Mykyta Sheptytsky, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Texas also got a goal from Ian Atencio as well. In addition, Texas received assists from Nick Nitta, Paolo DiGenova, Brock Brown, Anthony Koslow, and Conor Durkin, who contributed one each.

Texas was unable to stop the Capitals from sending pucks towards the net, and Topeka eventually piled up 32 shots on goal.

Topeka also got points from Andrew Cooley, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Alex Sauer, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. John Cuni also scored for Topeka. More assists for Topeka came via Hank Roers, who had two and Steve MacIver and Alex Johanson, who each chipped in one.

The Jr. Brahmas' Joe Hacker stopped 27 shots out of the 32 that he faced. Texas incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Capitals took out Ryan Lund after he had made 10 saves and installed Jacob Pelton in goal, where he finished with 13 saves and the loss. Topeka incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
